The Paston Effect

The Paston Effect, also known as Cold Attic Syndrome, occurs when saltwater air and excessive humidity or ocean breezes enter the attic through soffit vents, causing attic humidity to rise and ductwork to reach the dew point. As a result, mold can develop on the condensation-covered surfaces of the ducts. This mold is typically not visible to the untrained eye, but residents may detect it due to musty odors or may experience allergic reactions and asthma symptoms indoors.

Condensation on sweaty AC ducts can also drip down and stain ceilings. Over time, moldy air in the attic worsens, and ocean breezes entering through the soffits increase attic pressure, pushing contaminated air into the living spaces below. Mold-laden air can then seep down through hollow wall cavities, wiring holes around ceiling fixtures, gaps in recessed light housings, and other openings, including attic access covers.

When we examine homes or buildings affected by the Paston Effect, we often find that homeowners have been grappling with the issue for years, investing significant amounts in unsuccessful solutions. Maintenance personnel, mold inspectors, AC contractors, roofing contractors, general contractors, and even friends of the homeowners frequently suggest various ways to address the humid air seeping into the home from the attic, but these attempts rarely resolve the issue.

The solution may not involve simply increasing ventilation, as this could allow more outdoor humidity into the attic. Similarly, merely sealing the attic can introduce new challenges, making the correction process more complex than it may seem.

The solution requires a multi-step process that must be done accurately and customized to meet the specific needs of your home or building.
